Press Release
For immediate release

Actress Marie-Soleil Dion and
writer Dany Laferrière, member of the Académie française, invite you to celebrate the 23rd edition
of the Journées de la culture

MONTREAL, September 12, 2019 – On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 27, 28 and 29, actress Marie-Soleil Dion and writer Dany Laferrière, member of the Académie française, who are ambassadors for the 23rd edition of the Journées de la culture, invite people of all ages to celebrate arts and culture in nearly 350 cities, towns and villages in Quebec! The theme and common thread of the programming is BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER – Developing Relationships and Building Bridges, and culture lovers will be able to participate in thousands of free activities.

Young people kick off the three-day event

As is now the tradition, schools will be the launch pad for the festivities! On Friday, September 27, in more than 1,000 elementary schools in Quebec and the Canadian Francophonie, tens of thousands of children—and their teachers!—standing together in choirs, will sing the words to Elisapie’s song Nous avons marché. There are sure to be highly emotional moments during this fourth edition of Une chanson à l’école. The artist will take us on a journey of discovery of her culture and language in this original song, where she takes delight in including a couplet and refrain in the Inuktitut language. An instructional guide developed by a teacher in collaboration with the Avataq Cultural Institute suggests ways to enhance the activity. And this year, for the first time, the performances can be enhanced with choreography composed by the PPS Danse troupe

For their part, students in more than 200 secondary schools, encouraged by a video posted online by comedian and actor Mehdi Bousaidan, will take up their challenge of creating memes. To accommodate the particular context of high school classes, the second edition of J’aime les mots will be held over a one-month period, up until Wednesday, October 30, the day when the memes will be posted online. The activity sponsor will provide a live commentary on the humour and witticisms that young people post online under the #JmLesMots hashtag on social networks (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) and which will be relayed to an interactive gallery on the Journées de la culture website. No doubt, this comedian, beloved by teenagers, will add his own two cents’ worth in passing!

By participating in video game mapping, virtual reality, augmented reality, discovery podcasts, robot programming and creativity with iPads, participants of all ages will be exposed to culture through technologies with unlimited possibilities. Bagages is an activity where teenagers at Paul-Gérin-Lajoie-d’Outremont (PGLO) high school who are newcomers to Montreal can express themselves and take the stage. In drama workshops, theatre performances and interviews where the recently arrived teenagers talk about themselves, participants can listen to their stories about immigrating to and getting settled in a new country. They describe how they came from “elsewhere” and what it was like “before”, and then relate what it is like for them “here in this country” and “now”. These young people talk about their journeys with daunting wisdom, emotions that will make the hardest hearts tremble, and disarming authenticity. On both stage and screen in the drama workshops, participants will discover what it is like to be an immigrant and getting settled in a new country.

Excerpts from the play, facilitation by the PGLO theatre troupe, and a big party open to all.
Sunday, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Saint-Viateur Park, beside the school
